The Wickwire Journals project came to pass through the tireless efforts of Glen George, a Michigan boy who first visited Wyoming at the age of 21 in 1970. The Bighorn Mountains, the Paint Rock Valley, and the way of the ranching lifestyle all beckoned a yearning to his soul.

In 1993, after buying his beloved Paint Rock Ranch near Hyattville, Wyoming, Glen was awestruck to discover a journal from 1897 written by Byron F. Wickwire. The historic document chronicled Byron’s epic trip to the Yukon with 80 wild horses in hopes of trading them for gold. When Glen read about the journey of a lifetime through B.F. Wickwire’s own words, he was hooked. He knew that this was an adventure that needed to be shared with the world.

Through serendipitous connections, the pieces fell into place, and the puzzle began to take shape. After working with Leon Schatz and creating a website accessible at www.horsesforgold.com, the descendants of Byron Wickwire joined the adventure and shared more stories, photos, and memories.

The stories shared in Byron’s journals inspired the book series, The Wickwire Journals, and are the basis for the streaming series of the same name.

These books have been a labor of love for over a decade, and we’re excited to share these stories that connect us, the readers, to similarities with Byron Wickwire, the dreamer and chaser of adventures. Our sincere hope is that you, too, will be inspired to pursue your own horses for gold!
